  • Sokyo omakase – take 2!

I have this thing for Sokyo and omakases. I like both! The sushi I have at Sokyo is always so good, I feel like sushi anywhere else just isn’t as good! There are of course exceptions (like Umi Kaiten Zushi and all those nice restaurants in Crows Nest), but this is the one I keep coming back to.

I didn’t actually plan to have two omakase sessions in a year, this visit was all due to circumstance – I just happened to be in Sydney, and a winter omakase tends to be more interesting than a summer one – however, I missed out on truffle season by a few weeks. So close yet so far!

  • Eat Drink Perth

I think my blogging will slow down over the next few months, we’ll see! I have become somewhat permanently poor so I haven’t been going to as many cafes lately.

Still, Eat Drink Perth happened as part of Good Food Month, which happens here in April instead of October (my Sydneysiderer strikes again!). I found out because one of the cafes I follow (rocks 2 Slayers but only open Monday – Friday) was running some coffee events during this time – how could I not say no!

    Fancy a Filter?

  • Wildflower Perth

I was very excited when I heard that Wildflower was opening because it seemed like my kind of restaurant. However, I ended up putting off visiting, mainly because I am constantly trying to save money these days, plus my recent Sydney adventure took priority.

Of course, me being me, decided to spontaneously book a table one day.

  • Another Sydney coffee crawl

Since my Sydney visit was a pure foodie adventure, it was important that I drank lots of coffee, this time without almost dying from caffeine overdose. It was a combination of old and new!

  • Sydney photography

Now that I have two lenses, I take them everywhere. So here are some shots where I happened to be carrying my 60mm.

  • Sokyo Omakase

Oh hello again Sokyo, I’ve missed you! Last time it was the a la carte, this time it was the omakase. Previously I’ve only had omakase at the Tsukiji fish markets, so I was excited to have one in Sydney!

  • Kensington Street Social

First was Commune Social. Then, City Social. And the tidbit of gossip I got from there was that there was going to be a Jason Atherton establishment in Australia. And here it is, Kensington Street Social.

  • Spice Temple Sydney

It’s Chinese New Year. I hate Chinese food. I’m glad to be home. I needed to find a nice restaurant to book….

Spice Temple. Sure, why not. I can’t even take anything that’s even remotely spicy, but where else would I book on such an occasion?

I couldn’t help but be concerned that I wouldn’t like/couldn’t handle the food there, but it was the most fitting restaurant choice for the occasion. Plus I’d always wondered what was behind those lovely digital silk curtains every time I’d walked out of Rockpool Bar and Grill. Behind the heavy door were some stairs down and down and down… into a lovely space with the standard Rockpool Group reception, bar area, then the main dining room. It was super dark, but there was lighting at each table so you could see the food.

We opted for the Chinese New Year Banquet, categorised by each of the fortunes of the new year. The only one I didn’t manage to take good shots of were the Wealth dishes – cabbage and radish, and Sichuan style pickled cucumbers and shitake. Both pickles were slightly spicy (the cabbage and radish had an extra mound of some super hot stuff that I avoided) and so addictive! Who cares about a slight burning when things taste this good right from the start!
