  • Coffee-free record: 29 days

    Dear diary,

I did a no-coffee challenge with my barista for March and managed 29 days without coffee!

I drank coffee on Good Friday because it was a cheat day and I had a planned visit there anyway; I knew this a month in advance.

I don’t think I want to do the challenge ever again, but reducing coffee consumption has saved me money! So I might just reduce my cafe visits.

  • Making the bootstrap paradox mine

I have a dislike of the bootstrap paradox. I find it’s the one that I can visualise quite well, but as a result, I don’t like what I see.

I first saw a version of this in whichever Harry Potter movie it was and immediately didn’t like it because it didn’t make sense, because I saw a closed loop that had a discrete ending. And circles don’t have endings. I left it at that, back then.

I’ve probably encountered more through other shows and stories, but I only became conscious of the loop during the 11th Doctor, I think it was during the opening of the Pandorica when he encounters his dying self. Again, I didn’t like it, but I accepted it because he is a time traveller and can handle these things appropriately.

It wasn’t until the 12th Doctor explicitly talks about the bootstrap paradox that I realised I need to write down my interpretation of how to manoeuvre this scenario to understand why I don’t like it. Luckily, it’s coincided with me thinking about which of my characters can cross their own timestreams and get away with it (well, there’s always a consequence, but not as dire as shows make it out to be). • 2017 – A year in review

    Dear diary,

2017 was a good year. Everything I’d started in the previous two years continued, and got even better.

I continued to love dance and got lucky and found myself a dance partner! I did my first “real” competitions and performed really well, and even did a national championship! I love taking pictures of people dancing too.

I managed to visit Singapore for the first time and loved it, and visited Japan for the second time and loved that too! Got my Silver status with my frequent flyer program, which probably won’t happen ever again.

Work has been hectic, kept me busy so the year went super fast.

Made more barista friends and drank lots of coffee.

Also got appendicitis, an impressive achievement.

Still managed to draw some too, which is really impressive! Didn’t write as much though. Managed to record more dreams than ever before since I’ve somehow kept a dream diary alive.

Did more travelling, visited Hong Kong for the first time and China for the kazillionth time.

I finally blogged about Melbourne, and visited Tasmania for the first time, which I absolutely loved.

Went to far too many good restaurants this year (and ate fugu!), but it wasn’t that that broke the bank. It was my Christmas home cooking which has put me in deficit for the beginning of this year.

Looking forward, I already have 2018 all lined up (plus some), so let’s see how it all pans out!

  • Hello Tasmania, the cold but beautifully delicious food place

Oh Tasmania. The final state in Australia for me to visit, and now I’ve done all 6 states, and one territory. Northern Territory is my final frontier, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. I’ve always wanted to visit Tasmania, but never really bothered to go. All I wanted to do was explore the food festival that happens every new year, but I never wanted to put up with the crowds and the cost of travelling in the holiday season.

Well, finally I got my chance since I had a friend move there, so my accommodation was provided for. It was time to get to know Tasmania and see Salamanca Markets. All in less than two and a half days. First of all, here are some plane pictures!

  • MONA – Museum of Old and New Art

I was originally planning a foodie only tour of Hobart since my stay was only two and a half days here, but my brother (I think he was the first) asked me if I was going to visit MONA, and that if I wasn’t, that I should go there anyway.

Then I had a few other people talk about it, including my taxi driver, so I thought, hey, it’s a cool place, it featured in Restaurant Australia, and everyone knows about it, so I may as well get cultured while I’m at it.

I did a walk past the information booth on the first day that I was here to enquire the minimum time I would need to get through the museum, since I was very, very time limited with all my restaurant bookings. The lady said that whole day was best, otherwise 4 hours was recommended, and that at a minimum, I’d need two hours. Well, that was interesting. Not being interested in art, I figured I could do this in two hours. However, as my first day was spent getting to know Hobart city, I had to leave it for my second day, and the only time I really had was between my 12PM Franklin booking and my 6PM Aloft booking. Given that lunch generally takes me about an hour, that gave me 5 hours, or so I thought. (more…)

  • Melbourne 2017, the post I never got to make

I can’t believe it. Finally, a Melbourne trip that I’m going to write up properly. It must be Christmas! Or shortly thereafter. It also took a lot of planning and a 4 day weekend to get to this stage, so here goes nothing! A blog about my second favourite city in Australia.

  • Hong Kong – October 2017

Circumstances lead me to take a relatively unplanned holiday, and one for visiting relatives instead of exploring by myself. However, my brother managed to suggest that we stop by Hong Kong first, and that way, I could tick off another country that I’ve been too!

I was quite looking forward to it since I heard about the efficiency of Hong Kong, and I figured it’d be easy to navigate and communicate since the people there could speak English.

    But first, plane wings!
