  • Makrie Drinks Bubble Tea

I didn’t actually intend for this drawing to turn out how it did! I walked through an underpass lately with a “post no bills” sign and thought to myself, I should draw something that has that poster in the background. The vibe of it had to be similar to this world, so it ended up being Arridon. At first I thought maybe Irutha would be the one waiting here, but I’ve been drawing plenty of her, so the next best fit was Makrie. Why not bubble tea! That idea came after. I’m not even sure the world has bubble tea. Then I thought, this should have more meaning than just a random drinking bubble tea in an underpass. So, I figured, there should be graffiti. Meaningful graffiti, and considering I am still in a “the pigeons are drones” phase, it would be fitting for there to be messaging about taking down the government or something. So after a quick Google crash course on how to do graffiti fonts (I really hate artception; tattoos and graffiti and the like are so difficult to make up on the spot!), I went with the phrase “blind the drones”, meaning hide from the pigeons. But I still need an artist tag or something, right? So there was another piece that was meant to be on here for “see no eyes”, but maybe that’s the signature left on the original graffiti – it’d just be “SNE” and it’d be roughly behind Makrie’s head. The final decision to be made was whether or not the whole wall was made of bricks, and I really didn’t want to draw that, so it’s just concrete!

Making an actual full piece with background is so difficult ugh!

  • Boris

I drew my friend’s cat! He had passed away recently and I never met him, but I would get plenty of pictures of him being so adorable.

    RIP Boris!

  • Mackerel study

I’m still calling this the Photshop Takes Zero Skill series even though I’m using Clip Studio Paint now lol.

I’ve never done a colour still life study before, and wow, I really didn’t know where to start to be honest. I laid down GREEN as my first colour! Am I insane? No, I just don’t know colour theory.

  • Coffee Break (in the park)

Whoops, I gave two different drawings in a short span of time the same title! With the same characters!

This is a redraw of a 2015 picture, but again, everything is so much better this time around. Ristrel has ditched the muffin for a coffee lol.

  • Fish God

Ah MoonEye! The hardest to draw of all my “first” characters. This is technically MoonEye + 18 years, here’s when I last felt I had a proper drawing of him:

I upgraded him from a wizard robe to a kimono, but even then I wasn’t happy with all my attempts to draw him. It wasn’t until I decided to add a haori a few days ago that finally I thought I could get something good, and I did!

But I still didn’t have a pattern in mind, so I just went with fish scales for now. The haori on the other hand, I do like the patterning – even though it’s vastly different from the original photo, the leaves are meant to be the same as those from the trees in the Land of Falling Caterpillars!

  • Freik, Demonic Guardian

Ah it’s been far too long since I’ve drawn Freik! I also had an argument after my last attempt in Photoshop, so I finally tried out Clip Studio Paint in earnest. The colours are much more muted but that green glow is so saturated! I need more practice with it!

  • Coffee Break

I really need to practice perspective lines! But I’m happy with how Ris and Irutha turned out, and that’s what’s important to me.

I loved my original picture back in 2015 too, but I wanted to do a redraw of it, which turned out well enough for me to polish!

  • Tora Sushi

Over the past few years, I’ve really only been visiting the same places over again. Same cafes, on rotation.

I decided it was high time I branch out and try a few new things, and so far, my food and coffee discoveries have been great!

Then I noticed Tora Sushi had opened, a place with signage I had noticed while visiting Abacus coffee, but not open yet, until I read about it again in the news a couple of weeks ago. I am fairly certain that this is the first omakase sushi restaurant in Perth (Nobu notwithstanding?), and it feels very much like the omakase boom vibe that Sydney has right now. Which actually made me a little nervous – is omakase so ubiquitous these days, is it even an “experience” to chase anymore?

  • Hayman Island adventure!

I never thought I’d ever visit Queensland again, and especially not the Whitsundays! But I had the good fortune to get this opportunity from work, which was pretty amazing! Never would I have ever imagined that I’d work for a company who could provide an all expenses paid trip like this! Especially because I could take a friend!

We flew out from Sydney, to Hamilton Island, which then had a boat transfer to Hayman Island. I’d done some preliminary research that showed it was a fancy boat, not dissimilar to the posh pit on the boat to MONA.

  • Melbourne 2023

Carried on from my Sydney 2023 post (finally making some time in between drawings!), my first stop in Melbourne is almost always Brother Baba Budan. Having a 5PM closing time is handy!
